Squad Goals – can Wenger keep it together?
Champions League October 19, 2016With lots of talk about new contracts, there’s also the news that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may consider his future at the end of the season.
On Sky Sports Sunday Arsenal Slag Off, Mourinho Love-In Supplement, The Ox confessed that he may have a think about moving clubs in the summer to increase his playing time. Arsene Wenger has replied that he wants him to remain at Arsenal.
Wenger said:
“You would like him to stay at the club, I think his place is here. We like him, I personally rate him as a player and I hope that he will show that he can have a stable position in the team until the end of the season…”
“He is similar to Walcott this season. He has not been rewarded yet, but he is in a similar position because he has worked really hard…”
Talking of Theo, another player who likes a good contract wrangle/refresh is Theo Walcott. He’s been rejuvenated this season and chipped in with goals, assists, and he looks bigger, stronger and faster.
He even looks like he might have a found a bit of a mean streak from somewhere, and has matched his goal tally from last season, netting 5 times already this season.
Theo was linked with a move away in the summer after some very disappointing performances, but Wenger has said that it was never his intention to sell Walcott despite a fairly poor season last time out, Wenger said:
“Look, I haven’t spoken to anybody because I was not ready to let him go. I always wanted to keep him. He plays with more freedom and more desire. I think he has a less restricted attitude and that shows you that he is a completely different player…”
The talk at the moment seems to be whether or not Ozil and Sanchez will sign new contracts, and AW said:
“These kinds of players [Ozil and Sanchez], they can rise a little bit above the financial aspects of the game because they are not poor, they have to look really on the football side. Do they meet their needs at the club on the football front? If yes, every single Premier League club can find an agreement with the players, but we still keep our values that we have at the club, we pay what we can afford…”
The way things are going, what a boost it would be to keep this squad together, and tie down Ozil, Sanchez, Cazorla and Bellerin, also convincing Theo and Ox to extend their deals, what a statement of intention that would be…
