Arsenal legend gives major statement on Wenger playing Perez up front

All

Despite missing out on England and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy back in June, Arsenal still managed to sign a decent striker in the summer, the prolific Lucas Perez for a fee of around £17m.

The highly-rated striker’s style of play has been likened to Vardy and was picked ahead of Olivier Giroud for the weekend’s narrow 2-1 win over Southampton at The Emirates.

Arsenal legend; Martin Keown said that Wenger will have to make some changes to his formation if Perez is to be first choice up top, he told The Daily Mail:

“One thing I’ve noticed recently, having seen him on the touchlines, is that he likes his strikers to make runs beyond opposition defenders. He is very loyal to Olivier Giroud, but also recognises that if you have lots of passers of the ball in your side you need to give them time and options by stretching the play. Imagine how many assists Mesut Ozil would have if he had the likes of Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka to aim for.  Perez seems like a Jamie Vardy-style player, so his ability to run in behind defences could be exactly what Wenger is looking for…”

Perez’ performances last season at Deportivo La Coruna were promising, the Spaniard netting 17 goals in 36 appearances for the La Liga outfit, let’s hope its not too long before he opens his account for us.
