Director confirms talks over defender signing
Injuries, Premier League, Transfers October 11, 2016Werder Breman are targeting their former defender Per Mertesacker and it has been confirmed that talks have already beefing over the move.
The German international defender is currently out of contract at the Emirates Stadium and he has not been offered a new deal so it is still not certain he will remain at the North London club next season.
The 32-year-old German has not featured in a single match this season and is expected to be out of action until 2017 but our new signing Mustafi has filled the void left by Mertesacker and with Koscielny in fine form, the BFG looks like he’s considering his options.
Bremen have already shown an interest in signing back the World Cup winner after they’ve already signed Serge Gnabry in the summer window.
Werder’s Sporting director Frank Baumann told Bild via ibtimes:
“In the course of Serge transfer, we also talked about Mertesacker’s future.”
“Everybody knows what Hannover means to Per. Maybe we can make him enthusiastic about a return. The issue of Per Mertesacker is our currently not high on the agenda. It’s obvious, because we are second division and he is captain of Arsenal.”
“A lot has to come together so that a return is possible. The first requirement is that we ascend. First of all, Hannover will have to return to the Bundesliga. Right now that’s far away and sounds crazy. But in football many things are possible.”
I don’t personally think it necessary to sell a player like Mertesacker as he can always be used in competitions like the FA Cup and EFL Cup then we can rest the likes of Laurent Koscienly, Mustafi and Gabriel to allow them to consistently feature in the domestic League and Champions League.
