Defender making good progress on comeback trail
Injuries, Round-Up October 5, 2016Per Mertesacker is on the way to a comeback before the end of the year after the crippling injury he picked up in pre-season and thinks he can still play a part in our season.
In other centre back news, since he was injured, we’ve also bought Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding, and Gabriel is also coming back from an injury, also picked up pre-season.
Mustafi and Koscielny are forging quite the partnership at the back, and it’s thought that Mertesacker, despite being the Arsenal skipper this season will struggle to retain his place alongside Kos due to the emergence of this new double act.
Mertesacker is upbeat about his return though, also realistic and says he needs to have a think about his future ahead of the January window:
“I believe that I can reach a level again on which I am important for the team. I have the feeling that this is not the end, I look at the perspectives for me and my family, I think that I’ll intensify those thoughts from January on.
I know that I need to allow myself some time. The more time I allow my knee, the longer I’ll be able to play football. I can increase the workload already and I am no longer in pain…”
Get well soon our Captain!
